From January through March of 2012 we enjoyed a lively Reading Group on The Commons. Please visit the Reading List page to see what we read. Since the recent uniting of our two properties into one venue, we felt the need to better understand what is meant by "The Commons." The term generally refers to resources and spaces that are shared. Please enjoy this video for a sense of our shared values. We will offer the Commons Café again in the fall when Olympians once again go indoors for their fun.
The readings are a broad range of articles and book chapters including case studies, theoretical and spiritual materials. We want to explore what "The Commons" has meant historically, what it means to us and understand how to reflect that meaning into our community by the way we design and develop this shared site. If you think you'd like to participate in the Fall, please sign up now because the size is limited to 20 people.
Each week we'll enjoy the animated sharing of ideas as we discuss our readings together and share food. Here's the typical schedule:
6:00 - 6:15 - Meet, greet and seat
6:15 - 6:45 - Agenda style check-in on projects and progress
6:45 - 7:00 - Fill your plates with pot luck delights
7:00 - 8:00 - Conversation Café style discussion of assigned readings
Our discussion of the readings will be conducted in an adapted form of the World Cafe model. A central question guides small groups of 3-4 people, who doodle, talk and eat together. After 15 - 20 minutes (go get some more food) we'll switch tables and continue the discussion with different people. At the end, the thoughts & ideas are harvested by a facilitator and displayed by a graphic recorder. Any action plans that emerge from these discussions will be followed up on during the next week's agenda.See what Wikipedia says about "The Commons"
